Warehouse processes contains many packaging related requirements that need to be configure and customized. SAP EWM packaging specification provide solutions to most but it’s not simple to use. In order to provide right solutions, Functional consultants need to understand all the standard Processes from SAP EWM packaging specification with right master data.This blog post explains you basic understanding of SAP EWM packaging specification and its integration with various components.
From help.sap.com, A SAP EWM packaging specification is master data. The packaging specification defines all the necessary packing levels for a product in order, for example, to put away or transport the product. For a product, a packaging specification mainly describes in which quantities you can pack the product into which packaging materials in which sequence.
A packaging specification is a set of instructions for the employee in the warehouse. More specifically, the work steps that you enter in a packaging specification are intended as information for the employee. In this way you can, for example, give the employee exact instructions as to where to place the label on a box, or how a product should be stacked onto a pallet. The system can determine packaging specifications during various processes. There are two simple things to know here i.e. structure of packing specification and where & how to use these.
You can use this function to determine a packaging specification using the business characteristics you have defined. The system uses the condition technique to do this.
From the business characteristics predefined by SAP, you select those that are suitable for your
processes (for example, product and vendor). A set of business characteristics forms a condition type. You can define different condition types for different processes. After you have specified a condition type, you can assign a packaging specification to these business characteristics.
The following figure shows which processes use the packaging specification, and using which components. Also you can see SAP standard condition types and their table combinations.
The following processes use SAP EWM packaging specification determination:
In Extended Warehouse Management (EWM):
● Automatic packing in the inbound delivery
● Packaging material determination during warehouse order creation
● Packaging material determination in the outbound delivery
● Packaging material determination during deconsolidation
● Internal warehouse processes (such as determination of palletization data, determination of the operative unit of measure)
In Service Parts Planning (SPP):
● ATP Sourcing Rounding Rules
● MM Deployment Rounding Rules
We should first start with configurations of packing specifications with number ranges and pack specification group along with all structure related configurations. (IMG) for SCM Basis>Packing>Packaging Specification.
Maintain structure of packaging specifications starts with header, contents, Level type, element type, level set, define work step, and define packing material type. In order to understand structure of pack spec sees below figure.
You define a schema in Customizing, SAP Supply Chain Management under SCM Basis -> Packing -> Packaging Specification -> Determining Packaging Specifications -> Define Condition Schema.
Also we need to extend to each warehouse control for respective conditions.
Now we will go through the packing specifications for 3 important processes with configurations and master data details to achieve business requirements.
1) Pick-HU proposal at WO and print HU’s:
Business requirement is to propose right handling units for each Warehouse order (WOCR) and print HU’s before to start picking from RF.
Packaging material determination during warehouse order creation:
You use the determination schema for the packaging specification to determine the business keys that are to be used to find a packaging specification in the packaging profile for warehouse order creation.
Now we made sure all the configurations completed and see above pack spec created with all basic structure explained. See below master data conditions maintained for pack proposal (/n/SCWM/PSCT6 ) and along with print HU conditions(/n/SCWM/PRHU6).
we expect system should propose pick HU’s at time of WO creation and based on the print conditions we can expect the HU print accordingly at RF pick step.
2) Stock removal WT from pallet locations:
Business requirement is to determine stock removal search sequence from pallet locations and create WT for each pallet quantity.
Determination Procedure for Palletization:
You use the determination procedure for palletization to specify the business keys the system is to use to find the packaging specifications.see below configuration screen shots.
Also configure the pallet storage type with quantity classification indicator and round rule to get the pallet quantity WT.
With above we completed configurations and now we create a pack spec as shown below for pallet quantity article.
So once we complete master data, the article with pallet qty as 192 EA will search storck removal from pallet locations with the quantity classifier and create a task for each pallet quantity. This way we can pick pallet quantity items from specific bins.
For Inbound, Palletization runs when creating warehouse tasks for the inbound delivery, for unpacked items. If a packaging specification is found, then the system can propose 10 warehouse tasks with 100 pc each, for a delivery item containing 1000 pieces, for example (providing the pallet quantity 100 pc is specified in your packaging specification).
3) Special packaging for Inbound VAS orders:
Business requirement is to determine special instruction’s for VAS orders packing during putaway.
We can use standard VAS PS group and conditions to determine the special packing instructions for articles from VAS orders.
