Yard is basically a separate area outside warehouse, where vehicles either waiting or parking or with checking-in and checking-out details and also assigning to a warehouse door.  SAP EWM Yard management is all about to manage your yards where vehicles and transportation units that arrive and depart. Mapping movements within a yard using warehouse task and also monitor yard in the warehouse monitor. This blog post is basically to understand SAP EWM yard management in simple way along with configurations and master data.

yard-22In order to manage yard movements, first you need to register the vehicles and transportation units with check point then you can assign a yard bin that may be either parking space bins or door bins. The design of SAP EWM yard is basically yard bins that were used in different Vehicle/TU movements. To understand easily, there are three types of yard bins we use in SAP EWM yard management.

  • Yard bin for check point purpose
  • Yard bin for parking space purpose
  • Yard bin for warehouse door purpose

In order to do any yard movements for a transportation unit, first we should check-in the TU with yard bin and then we can plan the TU assigning to a warehouse door (internally it’s yard bin).

In order to get activate a TU you should properly maintain yard master data and configurations

Example of SAP EWM Yard arrival at Check point

See below example Door assignment as part of yard movement

See below three yard type bins that were configured and used for movements and these are showing report in the monitor Stock and bin>Yard management>Yard Binsyard-003

Now in order to get the above concepts of check-in/out and assign or Door movements in yard management, see below required configurations and master data

Required Configurations:

Configurations related to Transportation unit be viewed on my other blog post, but in this blog we cover the yard management

Activate Yard Management for Warehouse
SPRO>EWM>Cross-Process Settings>Shipping and Receiving>Yard Management >Activate Yard Management for Warehouse

Define Yard Using Storage type
SPRO>EWM>Master Data>Shipping and Receiving>Yard Management>Define Yard Using Storage Type
By creating a yard here will automatically create a storage type in the master data storage types

Structure Yard using Storage Areas
Inorder to use Yard Management functionality, we need to have a yard storage sections defined for Doors (on the yard side), Check point & Parking area.
SPRO>EWM>Master Data>Shipping and Receiving>Yard Management>Structure Yard Using Storage Areas

Define Checkpoints
SPRO >EWM >Master Data>Shipping and Receiving>Yard Management>Define Checkpoints

The number of checkpoints would reflect the physical number of places where TU’s are checked in and out of the yard.  If all of the check-in / check-out functions occur in one place, then only one checkpoint is needed even if the yard physically has two separate gates where vehicles enter and leave the yard.

Define Warehouse Process Types
Different WPTs allow flexibility to create yard movements that are confirmed immediately or movements that will be confirmed manually.  Also, different WPTs can be created to signify different types of moves in the yard.
SPRO>EWM>Cross-Process Settings>Warehouse Task>Define Warehouse Process Type

General Settings for Goods Receipt and Shipping
This configuration allows for checking arrival/departure times during check-in/out.  A setting can be made to display an error or warning message.  Also, the warehouse can be set up to trigger GI when check-out occurs.SPRO>EWM>Cross-Process Settings>Shipping and Receiving>General Settings>General Settings for Goods Receipt and Shipping

Warehouse Door
SPRO>EWM >Master Data>Warehouse Door>Define Warehouse Door

Assign Staging Area/Door Determination Group to   Door
SPRO>EWM>Master Data>Warehouse Door>Assign staging area/door determination group to door

Assign Staging Area to Warehouse Door
SPRO>EWM>Master Data>Warehouse Door>Assign staging area to warehouse door

Required Master Data:

Yard storage bins are associated with certain physical entities associated with the yard such as checkpoints, doors, and parking spaces.  When a TU is active in the yard, it is considered to be in a yard bin at all times.  Yard movements move the TU from one specific yard bin to another. /SCWM/LS01. The Yard Bins should be created with the Yard storage Type and the appropriate storage section. The following yard bins are created

Assign Warehouse Doors to Yard Bins
This task allows you to assign yard bins to warehouse doors.  The yard bin assigned to the door will be used as the destination or source bin for any yard movement going to or originating from a warehouse door.  A door must have a yard bin associated with it in order to facilitate yard movements to and from doors. /SCWM/YM_DOOR_BIN

SAP Easy Access>EWM>Master Data>Shipping and Receiving >Yard Management>Assign Warehouse Door to Yard Binyard-014

Assign Checkpoint to Yard Bin and SCU
This transaction links the checkpoint to a specific yard bin.  This yard bin will be used as the source bin or destination bin for any yard movements to or from the checkpoint.  The warehouse process type (WPT) that will be used for the check-in/check-out process and the supply chain unit for the warehouse are entered in this view also. /SCWM/YM_CHKPT_BIN
