Understand Post Processing Framework (PPF) in SAP EWM

I already wrote a SAP PPF blog post on how to activate and maintain standard EWM PPF Actions but did not get a chance to write the detailed concepts of PPF with a custom PPF actions for the business requirements. This blog post is basically for functional teams to understand the PPF concepts. At the end I also provided important PPF document links with SAP portal referrals.

All SAP applications now using SAP PPF and it is a part of SAP Web application server. As per SAP portal, PPF is the successor to Message Control and offers wider functional scope, more simple connection to the applications, and greater flexibility. As I came to know recently, PPF tools are using in all new SAP applications (includes ERP system) instead of using olden days ECC message conditions example of sending information to customer via IDOC. EWM in S/4HANA – EWM Release overview

We all know and saw the classic SAP (decentral) EWM product for large warehouse distribution centres. But now we hear SAP planned full-fledged EWM embedded in S/4HANA which includes TM and QM integration for the next EWM release (SAP EWM in S/4HANA). Recently I read several blogs on SAP portal and Webinar on innovations happening with SAP Extended Warehouse Management. I am always curious to know S/4 HANA, the next generation ERP business suite right from premise market with 1511 and S/4 HANA 1610. Now, SAP planned EWM in next S/4 HANA Release with advanced integration and optimized warehousing.

Posting change in SAP EWM

SAP EWM Posting change is a change of product stock categories in EWM, such as unrestricted stock to blocked stock, or change in the product or batch number. It’s basically changing a stock type or batch or product in a Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) system.

The process of posting change varies based on their warehouse structure and rules. Some Warehouses allow stock type changes within the bin and some would like to physically move out products to other bin locations. Also considering where the posting change triggers, some businesses trigger request in ERP and some trigger directly in EWM. Understanding Stock Types in SAP EWM

SAP EWM Stock Types

SAP EWM manages stock in stock types. System shows current stock situation on storage bin level. In every warehouse the physical stock located either in the warehouse bins or dock/staging areas. So in this way SAP EWM stocks had either “in Putaway” or “in Warehouse” with attributes like unrestricted, quality and blocked stocks. A means of subdividing storage location stock or special stock. The SAP EWM stock type gives an indication of a material’s usability.

Understanding Exception Codes in SAP EWM

Simple way to understand SAP EWM exception handling is to know what and when these exceptions are occurred to execute. This blog post explains you the basic understanding of SAP EWM exception codes that we need to know for what business context that user/system looking for and when these execution steps are running.

Understanding Warehouse Order and Activity area combination in SAP EWM

The Warehouse Order Creation Rule (WOCR) and Activity Area (AA) are very important topics in SAP EWM. SAP Logistics execution and Warehouse management. My initial days of  SAP career was not clear in terms of where, how and when SAP certification needed.  Those days it is very important for a beginner having a certification in SAP will have a competitive edge over other consultants. I am not a certified SAP professional and i am still working in SAP with out any questions on my certification from companies/clients. I certainly planned for certification but not sure whether i do or not. This blog post is basically a collection of data and links for SAP certification in LE-WM. As of now i did not see any EWM certification from SAP education site. They may add EWM sooner or later.

In 2010, SAP introduced a certification levels for consultants. There are two certification levels for SAP WM Certification. Associate certification and Professional certification.

Posting Change in WM and IM – SAP ECC 6.0

SAP WM Posting Change is required in order to change the stock category/special stocks in WM inventory from IM Inventory. DC Warehouses will require to do so many posting changes in a day like stock category changes from quality to/blocked to/ or special stock changes like consign to own/sales order stock to own/ or  mat to mat/sloc to sloc./etc.

In SAP ECC 6.0, you have the option to make use of quickly changing the stock category and special stocks from WM to IM with LQ02 for those stocks which are not physically moved from bin. This Blog post is basically explains the configuration steps and procedures to do posting changes.

Creating a Query in SAP ECC 6.0

Every SAP Functional Consultant might got an experience with the client by providing a training or creating some Queries. Most of the time, super users or users would like to create and see a simple business report with out ABAP program. I personally feel, very comfortable creating a Query in SAP ECC 6.0 version comparing to the older versions. SAP ECC 6.0 came up with very simple drag and drop design options along with Quickview to see the Report immediately. This blog post is to understand and keep remembering the simple steps in creating a SAP Query.

You may get so many resources online when you google it on the web. But at the end we need to get experience in creating and using the SAP queries for the client requirements. Understanding the Packing function in SAP ECC6.0

Packing function in SAP system is very important for Distribution centers and Retail outlet stores in order to exchange their goods data requirements between suppliers and Ship-to parties. The Ship-to parties can scan and check the goods through Pallet/Carton label information. This will optimize their business process by knowing the product information with load carriers and their weight and volume. In general, the Retail Warehouse operations contains more than 60% of workload in a day belongs to shipping process. You may have orders like customers orders , inter-company orders, intra-company replenishment orders, subcontract deliveries and etc. Every Warehouse distribution center needs to process a few hundred to thousands of outbound delivery orders in a day to ship and receive goods. Outbound delivery creation stage is very vital for both warehouse and Sales business teams to execute orders. So creating deliveries at right time with right variants will ease your work load. I would like to explain what are the ways and means of creating a deliveries in SAP ECC6.0 are available. When it comes to physical inventory functionality in SAP, Dynamic Cycle Counting gives you very efficient method and accuracy through RF devices. Before talking about DCC, i would like to brief about the Inventory methods and functionality in SAP WM module.

In general Physical Inventory can be conducted annually or continuously and for legal reasons, for balance sheet purposes, or for internal controlling. The process of taking a physical inventory involves planning, execution, and review. Consultants need to talk to the Business Teams. Based on the business audit requirements you need to configure the inventory method for a storage type in SAP WMS.

Cross Docking Functionality in SAP ECC 6

Cross-dock in SAPThis blog Post is for SAP consultants and WM Teams to understand the cross dock functionality in SAP ECC6 (WMS). The post also discuss about planning for Cross docking and how the cross docking actually taking place with or with out cross dock monitor.
I personally feel that deciding which type of cross-docking and what kind of materials suitable for Cross Docking is important. Most Clients may use to customize the SAP Cross-docking function based on their requirements.  Type of material suitable for cross docking are like a) pre-picked, pre-packed customer orders from another plant or warehouse b) materials that are pre-tagged, pre-ticketed c) promotional material d) Staple retail materials with a constant demand or low demand variance.

Let’s talk about Cross-Docking: In very simple SAP terminology “Cross docking matches inbound and outbound deliveries to avoid having to store material in the warehouse”. Not all material is suitable for cross docking, but when it can be used it reduces labor costs, delivery time to the customer, and the amount of warehouse space.

Being a Business owner looking at SAP WM solution

You know about your Industry with respect to your warehouse management.If you take SAP Central component solution for WMS, you can optimize warehouse activities including inbound and outbound processing, facility management and storage, physical inventory, and planned and opportunistic cross docking. You can take advantage of technologies such as radio frequency identification (RFID) and new workload balancing tools. You can measure employee activities by tracking direct and indirect labor and providing an accurate overview of all warehouse employee activities.
